Young ICCA Events Update

21 November 2024
by Paul Kleist and Valikhan Shaikenov (Events Co-Directors)

Among Young ICCA’s four core pillars are events, which are open to all and which include practical workshops, panel discussions, and debates, both in-person and online.  Recent highlights include the following:

  • Assessing damages, or quantum, can sometimes be challenging for legal professionals, particularly in complex cases:  a deep understanding of the law and polished advocacy skills do not necessarily translate when it comes to numbers.  On 6 June 2024, Young ICCA hosted a panel discussion in London as part of London International Disputes Week entitled “Solace on Quantum:  Getting to Grips with Damages in International Arbitration”.  The event, held at Cleary Gottlieb’s offices and co-sponsored by PwC, brought together a diverse array of perspectives on quantum—including counsel, arbitrator, expert, and funder—to consider what makes a good quantum expert, how to most effectively integrate quantum evidence into a party’s pleaded case, and recent trends.

  • As part of the ICCA Congress in Hong Kong, on 8 May 2024, Young ICCA hosted a skills training workshop entitled “Beyond Bargaining:  Understanding Human Behaviour in Negotiations”.  Led by Dr Claudia Winkler, founder and CEO of The Negotiation Academy, and taking place at the HKIAC’s offices, the workshop explored how human behaviour and psychology impacts commercial negotiations.  Through interactive exercises and role-playing simulations, participants gained experience applying a number of effective strategies, including anchoring and interest-based negotiation.
