MEET THE SPEAKERS

 

 

Ziya Akinci

 


 

Ziya Akinci, is the founding partner of Akinci Law Office. He is also the President of ISTAC and the head of the International Private Law Division of Galatasaray University Faculty of Law.

He focuses on dispute resolution and acted as counsel and arbitrator in many international proceedings, including construction projects.   

Professor Akıncı has been listed and recognised by numerous international organisations such as WWL, Legal500 and GAR 100 for his outstanding success in dispute resolution as well as construction law.

 

 

Sophia von Dewall 

 

 


 

 

Sophia von Dewall is partner at Derains & Gharavi and admitted to the Amsterdam and Paris Bar. She has acted in numerous international arbitration proceedings, as well as in legal proceedings before Dutch state courts.

 

As counsel, she has handled over 40 arbitrations for both private parties and sovereign States conducted under major sets of arbitration rules (including ICC, LCIA, ICSID, NAI, CEPANI and Swiss Rules) and governed by various procedural and substantive laws. Her practice covers a broad range of disputes, including those arising out of international commercial contracts, cross-border investment, joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions, construction/infrastructure projects and investment protection under international law.

 

Sophia also acts as arbitrator, sitting alone or as a member of a panel, in multiple arbitrations.

 

She is a member of the Executive Board of the Dutch Arbitration Association and of the Investment Arbitration Committee of the Dutch Arbitration Association. She is equally a member of the Dutch ICC Committee on Arbitration & ADR and part of the ICC Taskforce on "Addressing Issues of Corruption in International Arbitration". 

 

Anna Guillard Sazhko (moderator) 

 

 


 

Anna Guillard Sazhko is a multilingual independent counsel and arbitrator based in Paris. Throughout her career, which spans over thirteen years, she has garnered extensive experience in international arbitrations conducted under the ICC, ICSID, ISTAC, UNCITRAL, and SCC Rules. Her specialized focus lies in Ukraine, Central Asia, and the CEE region, where she has represented clients in significant high-stakes cases. Throughout her career, Anna has been appointed as a solo arbitrator, co-arbitrator and presiding arbitrator. 

 

Anna is also a board member of the Ukrainian Arbitration Association and a co-founder and co-chair of the Turkic Arbitration Associates. Recognized for her exceptional skills and contributions, Anna has been featured in Who's Who Legal’s Arbitration lists for 2021, 2022, and 2023 as a "Future Leader” and received the Lexology Client Choice Award 2021 for Arbitration in France.

 

Demet Kaşarcıoğlu

 


 

Demet is partner at Esin Attorney Partnership. Following her graduation from Marmara University in 2009 and completion of LL.M. studies at Newcastle University in 2011, she joined Esin Attorney Partnership in 2012. Since then, she has been practicing arbitration, acts as both counsel and arbitrator in arbitrations administered by local and international institutions such as ICC, LCIA, ASA, DIS, ISTAC, ITOTAM etc. Demet’s arbitration practice is heavily focused on complex commercial disputes, especially disputes arising out of M&A transactions and construction projects. Demet is a member of the LCIA International Arbitration Group, ICC YAF, Young ISTAC and ASA Young Arbitration Practitioners Group.

 

 

Can Yeğinsu

 


 

Can Yeğinsu is a barrister and arbitrator practising from 3 Verulam Buildings in the areas of commercial and investment treaty arbitration, commercial litigation, private and public international law.

 

In the field of international arbitration, Mr. Yeğinsu has been described as “an outstanding advocate with a vast intellect and faultless judgement” (Chambers Global) “fiercely clever but also a true team player; he knows arbitration inside out” (Chambers UK), possessing “serious legal brainpower, accompanied with a deft touch with clients” (Legal 500), and “in a class of his own” (Chambers Global). He is recognised in WWL, where he is described as a “devastating cross examiner and elegant advocate…in a league of his own.” In 2023, Mr. Yeğinsu was shortlisted for Barrister of the Year for International Arbitration by both Chambers & Partners and Legal 500.

 

Mr. Yeğinsu is Adjunct Professor of Law at Georgetown University Law Center and Visiting Professor Koç University Law School, where he teaches investment law and arbitration. He is also Lecturer-in-Law at Columbia Law School where he teaches international law and Partner Fellow at the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law, University of Cambridge. He is a Member of the IBA’s Investment Treaty Arbitration Subcommittee and a Member of the Executive Council of the American Society of International Law.
