On 5 May 2016, Young ICCA held a half-day training workshop on Arbitration Skills at Mkono & Co. Advocates in Dar es Salaam.

The theme of the workshop was “Young Arbitrator in East Africa: Challenges to Opportunities” and topics discussed during the workshop included Getting into International Arbitration – a general overview of what it takes to make the ‘cut’ and Arbitration in Tanzania - Challenges and Opportunities.  The workshop was conducted by reputable professionals, namely Dr. Wilbert Kapinga, Partner at Mkono & Co. Advocates; Ms. Elizabeth Karanja, Director at JMiles & Co;  Mr. Jotham Lukwaro, Vice-Chair of the Tanzania Institute of Arbitration; Ms Madeline Kimei, Founder of Resolution Experts (TZ) and Mr. Beatus Malima, Parnter at Mawalla Advocates.

The workshop attracted over 60 applicants and was attended by over 25 participants. Participants were made up of legal professionals, law students and Young ICCA Members.

Speaking on behalf of the participants, Advocate Madeline Kimei, CEO of Resolution Experts, a mediation and alternative dispute resolution service provider, said that there was necessity to organize the workshop to address the challenge that the country faces when it comes to the commercial arbitration platform.

“Tanzania is still lagging behind in terms of practices of commercial arbitration, a challenge that needs be addressed promptly, so as to encourage other professionals to join the commercial arbitration and to promote capacity building practice to all practitioners,” she said.

According to Advocate Kimei, the workshop is the first of its kind in Tanzania and has addressed an important gap in the legal sector.  Most legal professionals in Tanzania are in a dire need of skills and capacity building in the field of commercial arbitration; such workshops will assist in bridging the gap by providing the right amount of information, trainings and skill sets.

The Young ICCA Steering Committee in Dar es Salaam comprised of Mr Kamanga Kapinga, Ms Madeline Kimei, Ms Amalia Liu and Ms Sarah Mhamilawa. The team was assisted by Mr Damien Nyer and Mr Tolu Obamuroh.

The training was supported fully by Mkono & Co Advocates and Ramada Encore.
