How did you get involved in international arbitration? In a way that most junior associates at firms can appreciate, I was thrown into the fire of an arbitration case and happened to enjoy the heat.
What is your favourite virtue? Being able to resist the urge to take more than 1 penny from the “take a penny, leave a penny” jar.
What are your favourite qualities in another person? Honesty, integrity, and the ability to laugh uncontrollably at a good joke.
What is your chief characteristic? Physical: Lack of facial hair. Mental: Resourcefulness.
What is your main fault?Having to constantly Ctrl+Alt+Del my brain whenever I get the blue screen of writer’s block.
What is your favourite occupation? Teacher.
What is your idea of happiness? Playing board games with my family after gorging on delicious food.
What is your idea of misery? Having to re-enroll in high school.
If not yourself, who would you be? Starting goaltender for the Edmonton Oilers hockey team.
Where would you like to live?On a big plane and flying around the world.
Who is your favourite prose author?I have many, but I particularly admire Yann Martel, a fellow Canadian.
Who is your favourite hero/heroine in fiction? Astronaut Mark Watney from the novel “The Martian.”
Who is your hero in real life? I have two: my parents. They hopped on a plane with only the clothes on their backs and built a loving family in the cold northern city of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada (although a part of me still believes that they got lost on their way to Miami).
What historical person do you most dislike? The person who invented spam mail.
What is your favourite name? Bono. Also happens to be one of my favorite musicians.
What do you hate the most? Traffic jams.
What is your natural talent? I can bake a mean lasagna.
What is your favourite arbitration-related decision? Due to confidentiality restrictions I can only say it involves a breach of contract between two parties.
Who is your favourite arbitrator? Dr. Michael Moser. Solid reasoning coupled with a fantastic beard.
Who is your mentor? My older brother. He never seems to run out of advice (both of the solicited and unsolicited variety) to give me.
What is your motto? To borrow a quote from the Iron Lady, former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, “Being a leader is like being a lady. If you have to remind people you are, you aren’t.”
Why should you be elected Co-chair?Because I believe in the work Young ICCA does in exposing young practitioners to the world of arbitration and am committed to further promoting Young ICCA’s mandate in the Asia-Pacific region.
